Dra 01601a

2.jpg“V-veronica!” coff coff “Veronica!”

“Dr. Lujan! Oh, Doctor Lujan, what happened to you?”

“In the t-tomb, Veronica! Mummies! And this! A Polaroid DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive and ATSC Tuner!”

“Polaroid? I thought that company was dead. If the dead have risen, wouldn’t they be zombies, Doctor Lujan?”

“N-no, Veronica! Z-zombies are the b-byproduct of myths created under a n-near feudalist plantation system d-designed to keep the original occupants trapped in fear and poverty while mummies are a c-celebration of a traditional African culture, rising only to defend themselves from coff direct exploitation!”

“You’re hurt, Doctor Lujan, you don’t know what you’re saying.”

“I saw it, Veronica! I saw the 160GB hard drive DVR shining in the moonlight! I saw the dangling bandages of the entombed kings now risen from their slumber! I saw the DVD burner! I saw the ATSC digital tuner! I even saw an NTSC analog tuner like those they used in ancient times!”

“Doctor Lujan! But if mummies only seek revenge, that means…”

“Yes, Veronica. In my quest for history and archeological knowledge… I took the Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder’s manual from out of the box!”

“Oh, Doctor Lujan! What have you done?”

“Done, Veronica? I’ve learned that the Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder has something called YesDVD, which lets you record at the touch of a button. I’ve learned about the HDMI input/output, as well as the front USB and SD card reader, and Firewire, Veronica! S-video output, Coaxial digital, Veronica, I’ve learned it can record in real time, to a DVD+R/RW as well as to the hard drive! I’ve learned how to skip forward with a 30 Second Skip and backward with a ten second replay. I’ve coff conquered time, Veronica! Conquered time itself!”

“Oh, but the cost, Doctor Lujan! Sure, we can play music CDs, or DVDs, or view JPGs, but was it all worth it? I mean, it only outputs to 480i or 480p and doesn’t record in High Definition. Was it really all worth it?”

Coff coff “Help me bar the door, Veronica. Hurry, before the mummies reach us!”

“Doctor Lujan, please, just give them back their Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder so we can escape!”

“Veronica, they’ve broken through! Run, Veronica! Run! Run for your life! ARRRRRRRGH!”

latasha norman

111.jpgThe tragic loss of Jackson State University student Latasha Norman has hurt many hearts. JSU president Ronald Mason has the following statement on Latasha Norman.

We are profoundly saddened to learn of the death of our missing student, Latasha Norman. It is a tragedy we had hoped would not come to pass, and the Jackson State University family is devastated by this latest development.

I want to extend my deepest and most profound sympathy to the Norman/Bolden family, Latasha’s friends and others who loved her. There are simply no words that can take away the anguish I know you must feel in the face of such a heinous and senseless act. But I want you to know that we at Jackson State University, as well as countless others who prayed for her safe return, mourn with you.

I want to assure you that our Jackson State Department of Public Safety, as well as several other agencies, including the Jackson Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and FBI, are continuing to work tirelessly to bring the person responsible for Latasha’s death to justice. We thank them for their diligence and hard work and ask that you join us in supporting them as they continue in those efforts. I’d especially like to commend Chief Rebecca Coleman, who heads the Jackson State University Department of Public Safety. She got involved in this from the beginning and never, ever let it go.

The university is offering counseling for our students, faculty and staff. We urge those needing assistance in dealing with this incomprehensible act to please seek out those counselors. All classes have been cancelled Friday. Classes will resume Monday. A memorial service will be held at noon Monday in the Rose Embly McCoy Auditorium.

Though no one can be completely safe from individual acts of violence, I want to take this time to reassure the students, parents, faculty and staff that we will continue to work hard to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. - JSU News

Cari Champion

110.jpg
Channel 46 weekend news anchor Cari Champion says she was fired last week following an off-color comment that made it on the air.

According to this report by Richard Prince, the station thinks Champion uttered the “MF” word as she and co-anchor Mike Moore bantered during a commercial break. What the anchors didn’t know was that their conversation was being broadcast over the air.

Champion has appealed her dismissal to the station’s corporate headquarters, saying she didn’t drop the “MF” bomb. Instead, she says, she used the word “Mothasucka.” Kind of like saying “heck” instead of “hell.”

It had to have been an absolutely fascinating conversation between Champion and her bosses the next day. Imagine them dancing around the distinctions between “Mothasucka” and “Motha-…” well, you know.

I’m reminded of what George Carlin once said about middle-class housewives who shriek out the word “Shoot!” when they drop the casserole dish: “You can’t fool me. Shoot is shit with two O’s.”

Urbanlegend.com

6.jpgIt seems that Ascot Realty in Buford is having more than a little bad luck. First, a Buford family reports in the Gwinnett Daily Online that the company destroyed their landscaped yard on July 20th. Two days later, the same paper reports that the frame of a house fell after a violent rain storm.

I came across the second story in a news feed on my Merchant Circle web site. Further investigation turned up the story of the fallen home.

Per the Gwinnett Daily Online, this picture originally ran on ABC affiliate WSB TV Channel 2 Action News Atlanta.

I did the same thing I always do when someone forwards me an email about a dying child collecting greeting cards or a pair of hunters whose dog sank their truck on the ice - I looked around online. (For emails I tend to check out Snopes.com or UrbanLegend.com, something I wish everyone would do.) What I found was quite interesting. I found - nothing.

I found nothing on any other site, including Ascot Realty’s. One of the pictures from the Gwinnett Daily Online - a news source I confess to knowing nothing about - claimed to come from the local ABC affiliate WSB TV Channel 2 Action News Atlanta.

Now, I’m not accusing anyone of making anything up. But with only a single source making the claim - and one that, interestingly, showed up “just minutes following the incident “, per their own words - I’m not taking anything at face value.

What I am accusing Ascot Realty of is laxness. After I wrote a previous blog entry on an individual’s online credibility, I suppose I should have followed it with a company warning (I’m sure Ascot Realty is a big reader of my blog). As business owners, we have to monitor what is said about our business, especially on the internet, where information can reach millions and keep reaching them for months on end.

7.jpgWhat should Ascot have done? I would recommend creating a page off of their home page that explains their view. I can understand not wanting a prospective buyer to stumble in and change their minds.  However, they could create a single stand-alone page that would come up in response to the controversy. They could create a blog that would, among other things, allow them to resond to these accusations. They could take some form of action to respond to the negative publicity other than ducking and hoping it all goes away.

This picture, also from Gwinnett Daily Online, is of a yard destroyed by bulldozer. The yard was professionally landscaped. Guess they aren’t worried about the watering ban now!

Personally, I am interested in hearing what the deal is with Ascot. Although we are out of town right now, I intend to give them a call post-vacation and find out what their version of the truth is.

Or perhaps they will beat me to the punch. Perhaps someone from their community will respond to my blog - after all, it is going out on the ‘net and will soon become searchable. I invite them to give their version of the truth here, as well as asking anyone with more information to discuss the subject.

One caveat - I am out of town, so please forgive me if it takes a little more time to respond. But believe me when I say that I am quite interested in hearing other points of view.

At the scene of an accident

58.jpgFirst, you should assess the scene for danger. You cannot help anyone if you are injured.

Make the area safe
Ensure it’s safe to treat the casualties at the site. For example, at the site of a road accident you need to stop the flow of traffic.

Assess the situation

  • Look out for any continuing danger, to yourself and others
  • Make a first assessment of the casualties - is anybody in immediate danger?
  • Is there anybody to help you?
  • Do you need to call the emergency services?

Quiet casualties should always be your first priority

quiet casualty may be an indication that the person is unconscious. Quiet casualties should always be your first priority.

A casualty who is bleeding heavily or is obviously in pain is upsetting, but a quiet casualty could be in the most serious condition and you should always attend to them first.

Actions
Check casualties using this list:

  • Response: is the casualty conscious?
  • Airway: can the casualty breathe normally?
  • Breathing: is the casualty breathing normally?

Further actions
Ask others to help you to:

  • Make the area safe
  • Call for help
  • Maintain dignity of casualties, for example by screening them from view
  • Administer general help in supporting limbs, offering reassurance and so on

Defibrillation

During a cardiac arrest, the heart continues to beat but in an uncoordinated way. This means it no longer pumps blood to the brain and other key organs effectively.

Delivering an electronic shock to the heart can restore a normal rhythm.

You should only use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if you’ve been trained to use one and can perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The AED is attached to the person’s chest using adhesive pads. It analyses the casualty’s heart rhythm automatically and advises the operator on whether an electronic shock is required.

The shock is delivered by pressing a button on the AED.

Actions

  • Call 999
  • Continue with CPR while the AED is prepared and the adhesive pads are attached
  • The AED will give a series of visual and verbal prompts as soon as it’s switched on
  • Follow the prompts until the emergency services arrive and take over

Further actions
If the casualty starts breathing normally, place them in the recovery position.

Leave the AED attached.

Back injuries

57.jpgInjuries to the spine can cause paralysis, so first aiders must treat suspected back injuries very carefully.

What are they?
The spine, or backbone, protects the spinal cord, which controls many body functions. Back injuries can be caused by pinching or displacement of nerves, or by spinal fracture.

Symptoms
Suspect a spinal injury after an awkward fall or awkward injury. Look for:

  • Localised tenderness around the back or neck
  • Shooting pains in casualty’s limbs
  • Limbs feeling heavy or tingling
  • Loss of sensation in limbs below level of injury
  • Breathing difficulties

First aid aims

  • Prevent further injury
  • Get casualty to hospital

Actions if casualty is conscious

  • Do not attempt to move casualty
    Call 999
  • Offer reassurance
  • Steady and support casualty’s head in your hands

Actions if casualty is unconscious

  • Check airway and breathing
  • Place casualty in modified recovery position if you have help

Actions if casualty stops breathing

  • Call 999
  • Open airway
  • Check for breathing again
  • Give resuscitation until help arrives

Broken bones - child
Broken bones always need professional attention, but there’s action you can take immediately to help the casualty.

Because children tend to put their arms out as they fall, arms, elbows and wrists are where breaks tend to occur.

Symptoms

  • Intense pain
  • Inability to use the limb
  • Bruising or deformity at site of the break

Actions - broken arm

  • Sit child down
  • Ask them to support injured arm with other hand
  • Put a pad between arm and chest
  • Put injured arm in a sling
  • Place a broad-fold bandage over sling and around arm and chest
  • Take child to hospital

Actions - broken leg

  • Lay child down and support leg at ankle and knee joints - by hand if an ambulance is expected soon, or on a chair if not
  • Steady injured leg with padding
  • Put rolled-up blankets outside injured limb and between legs
  • Keep child warm
  • Call 999

Eight Steps to Creating Your Dorm Room

56.jpgShopping online for dorm decor is the smart way to shop. You’ll have the flexibility of browsing a variety of sources without using even a gallon of gas. And you can click your way through hundreds of selections at midnight or noon. It’s your choice.

Whether you want to find the perfect set of sheets, a cozy down comforter, a purple transparent lamp, or accessories for your jungle-themed room, you’re sure to find it somewhere online. And whether you find a dream dorm room at PBTeen or on the organized shelves of The Container Store, the many styles and colors available today mean you’ll probably be able to find exactly the right items for your taste and budget.

Here are eight steps with tips on how to start your search for great room decor:

1. Ask for information from your school about room sizes, existing storage, and recommended items. This may be on the college website or in their orientation materials. If not, call the administration office to ask if they have a list of requirements or suggested items. For example, will you need linens, kitchen equipment or lamps?
2. Next, determine which items are prohibited. For example, some dorms don’t allow candles, halogen lamps, or flammable wallhangings. Find out now so you don’t waste time and money.

3. Contact your future roommate. Discuss financial arrangements and room decor, being honest about your budget. Try to be flexible and share ideas and opinions. You may land a roommate who really doesn’t care, and maybe won’t work with you. But maybe you’ll at least be able to decide on a color scheme or room theme to help you plan for decorating purchases.

4. Browse dorm decor websites to get inspiration, see color schemes, and find theme ideas. The Bed Bath & Beyond® site is a terrific place to start with dorm checklists, tips, and a convenient “pack and hold” shipping service to send your order directly to your school on the date you specify.

5. Bookmark favorite items on websites or print out photos to compare colors, styles, and prices.

6. Fill in your “need” and “want” lists and prioritize each, so your budget is spent on the basics first. Decide what items you already have (sheets, rugs, lamps, TV) that you can take with you, and what items your roommate will bring.

7. Research choices. Make a detailed packing list with everything you might need, including furniture, desk accesssories, and clothing items. If possible, ask other students what’s worked for them. Compare sizes and brands. Browse for various storage options. Don’t buy in a rush, only to find out later something else would be better or cheaper. Use your measurement list or floorplan to help determine what will fit.

8. Buy only when you have a clear plan, know what you need, and know what will fit both in your room and in your budget.

Top Dorm Room Comfort

55.jpgIt may be on your mind right about now — just what to take and what to leave behind as you pack for college. You may have already gotten a lot of advice from your friends, your parents, your school, and your relatives.

But ultimately it’s up to you how you’ll live in your new “home away from home” and how you’ll try to decorate it. Comfort in this small space will be one way to make a tiny dorm room feel homey and inviting.

Here’s our list of items that will make any room more comfortable.

1. A big rug will soften the look and feel of hard institutional flooring and make it more inviting to lounge or exercise on the floor.

2. A featherbed mattress topper or mattress pad can really improve the comfort of a dorm bed. They’re fluffy and comfy, and available in either feathers or fiberfill.

3. Good lighting is essential. Have focused task lighting at the desk, by a chair, and near the bed, so you can read and work anywhere.

4. A comfortable place to sit is a must. It can be a side chair, loveseat, or even pile of pillows, but will be great for studying, lounging, or talking on the phone.

5. A BedLounge is a great chair-lounger-reading pillow built with an ultra-lightweight, internal Active Frame. It can support an adult’s weight and can bend, move, flex and customize itself to the user’s body shape and comfort needs. It even has a headrest and armrests. You shouldn’t go away from home without it!

6. Closet accessories are made to solve storage problems. Evaluate your space, then choose from peg racks, over-the-door shoe racks, belt and tie holders, and hanging shelves to organize your clothes and accessories.

7. Large body pillows are great for sleeping. But you can also use them to turn your bed into a “sofa” or for extra floor lounging.

8. Handled laundry and shower totes are made to organize and carry just about everything. Keep a big one on the floor of your closet to collect laundry, and use another to hold bathroom supplies. Then grab and go!

9. A large bulletin board or white board is essential for notes, photos, schedules, and assignments. It can help you get organized, show off mementos, and serve as a message center.

10. Filing space — another must-have . Whether you use a file crate or full-size cabinet, it will go a long way in organizing your completed schoolwork, letters from home, insurance papers, pay stubs, tax info, scholarship applications, and more.

11. Wall Decor can be another touch of home. Use artwork to reinforce your room theme or highlight special interests… make a collage out of favorite photos (using color photocopies)… hang favorite posters — whatever feels like “home” to you. A full length mirror is another wonderful convenience. Use it to check your outfit and decorate the edges with photos, tickets, and memorabilia.
